Before You Call It Lazy

Terrie Power Coaching

…

I sat down to work on an important project.

Then I organized my pens.

Not metaphorically. I moved them into different slots, rearranged my office, and made sure everything looked just right.

Well, hello, organized pens.

Then I looked at the clock. The pens looked fantastic, but I had not touched the project.

What I Didn’t Consider

This happened years ago during an extremely busy season. My sons were navigating school changes after COVID, my parents had moved next door, my dad was sick, and I was carrying responsibilities at work, home, church, and with my family.

But I didn’t consider any of that. I looked at the unfinished project and decided:

I’m lazy.

I lack self-control.

Maybe I don’t want this badly enough.

I’ve been thinking about that season because resistance has been showing up again as I make decisions about Terrie Power Coaching.

Different season. Same pull.

For me, Enneagram Nine sloth can look like losing touch with my priorities. Sometimes I shut down. Other times I stay busy doing things that matter less.

The Pens Were Not the Problem

Resistance may not be the verdict. It may be the clue.

It may mean:

The next step feels uncomfortable.

The task is too large or unclear.

Your capacity has changed.

Resistance doesn’t get to make every decision. But criticizing yourself may not be the best place to begin.

Before You Push Harder

If fear is underneath the resistance, name what feels risky.

If the task feels foggy, shrink it until you can see the next action.

If your capacity has changed, adjust the plan without deciding the goal no longer matters.

I prayed, did some self-coaching, and reminded myself why my goals matter. The stress didn’t disappear, but I responded differently.

What might your resistance be telling you?

Today, choose three things that will keep you connected to what matters. Not three things that fix everything. Just three things that keep you from checking out or giving up.

I wrote more about the organized pens and the three reasons resistance may show up:

If you keep asking, “Why can’t I do what I know I need to do?” you may be too close to see what is creating the resistance.

In a Momentum Conversation, we’ll look at where you feel stuck, what may be getting in the way, and practical next steps that fit you, your goals, and your life right now.

For today, start with your three.

Sometimes growth asks us to build differently. Terrie Power Coaching … I've been thinking about something this week. School has been back in session for about four weeks now, and it finally hit me... My life is really different now. For years, August meant getting ready for another school year. It was one of my favorite times of the year. I loved the excitement, the people, the traditions...all of it. This year was different. Instead of getting a classroom ready, I was sitting at my desk...

Sometimes the best update isn't adding something new. Terrie Power Coaching … I've been thinking about something this week. Isn't it funny how we're so quick to blame ourselves when something stops working? Our first thought is usually, "I need to try harder." We rarely stop to ask if life has changed. And honestly...life changes all the time. Maybe the kids are back in school. Maybe your business has grown. Maybe you're caring for aging parents. Or maybe your priorities have quietly shifted...

A reboot isn't about starting over. Terrie Power Coaching … Last week I introduced the idea of a Reboot, Update, or Restore. Several of you reached out after reading the blog, and one question kept coming up: "Okay...but where do I start?" My answer is probably simpler than you're expecting. When we feel out of rhythm, we tend to think we need to fix everything. We start making long lists, creating new routines, or convincing ourselves that this time we're finally going to do it all. I've...
