When Everything Feels Like Too Much

Reader, Ever have one of those weeks where everything piles up at once?

That was me.

I had a business launch going on. My son moved back to college. My oldest is still job hunting. The house needed a good scrub. And school started, which doubled my workload.

It felt like too much.

My chest tightened, tears came, and I wanted to shut down.

So I did what I sometimes do when I’m overwhelmed… I rewatched an old TV series. Something easy. Something I didn’t have to think too hard about.

But here’s the truth: ignoring everything or trying to do everything both leave you drained.

The shift happened while I was preparing to teach an upcoming workshop and I was talking on mission statements. I realized the very thing I was about to teach others was exactly what I needed to practice myself.

So I pulled out my mission statement. And suddenly I had a filter. I could ask:

  • What matters most right now?
  • What can wait?
  • Where should I focus first?

It wasn’t perfect, but it brought peace.

Have you ever tried looking at your mission statement—or even just your “why”—when you’re staring down your to-do list?

I know… it sounds a little silly. Maybe even out of touch. Like something only a CEO in a corner office would do. But here’s the truth: it works for all of us.

💭 Note to Self: What I’m Learning

Overwhelm tells us the answer is to push harder or check more boxes. But the real answer is stepping back. Your “why” is the filter that helps you decide what deserves your attention—and what doesn’t.

🔧 Try This:
Write your mission statement using this template:

“I am a [ROLE]. I exist to [IMPACT]. I do this by [ACTIVITIES].”

This framework comes from the Full Focus LifePlan Kit, a powerful tool for mapping out the next 5–10 years.

Here’s a sample:
“I am a mother, a wife, and an entrepreneur with many passions. I exist to nurture my family and create meaningful work that makes a difference. I do this by loving deeply at home, pursuing my creative ideas with courage, and building connections that bring joy and impact to others.”

Don’t overthink it. Start with one sentence. Write it on a sticky note or make it look beautiful. Look at it the next time your to-do list feels impossible.

Working on Mission,

Terrie
