🔍Balance Isn't About Doing It All - Top Priority

Balance isn’t about doing it all—it’s about choosing what gets your best and what gets your enough.”

Here’s something I’ve noticed: life rarely slows down on its own.

Emails, deadlines, kids’ schedules, church activities, errands, and “just one more thing” at night — it all piles up. And even when I thought I was “relaxing,” I realized I was filling that time with my phone in hand and the TV in the background.

That rhythm wasn’t bad… but it wasn’t giving me what I needed either. What I really wanted was more connection, more fun, and more time in prayer.

That’s when I went back to the 10 Domains of Life — a framework that helps me check in with the big picture. It reminds me that balance isn’t about doing everything equally. It’s about deciding what gets my best right now, and what simply gets my enough.

Here’s a simple way to start:

  • Write down the 10 domains: Mind, Body, Spirit, Love, Family, Community, Work, Fun/Hobbies, Money, Environment.

  • Circle 2–3 that are most important in this season.

  • For the rest, pick one small way to keep them alive (like a 5-minute walk, a text to a friend, or reading one verse before bed).

I also use these domains as part of my weekly preview. On Sunday evenings, I scan through each one and ask: “Which area needs a little more love this week?” Then I plan one small action:

  • If Body feels neglected → I schedule two after-dinner walks.

  • If Community feels quiet → I text a friend and set up coffee.

  • If Fun/Hobbies is missing → I block 20 minutes to play a board game or grab a coloring book.

This keeps life from being “all or nothing.” Even when my main focus is on work or family, I don’t abandon the other areas — I just keep them alive with small, intentional touches.

If you’d like to see how I also use the domains for long-term life planning (quarterly and even 5–10 years ahead), I share more in this week’s blog → Read it here.

💭 Note to Self: What I’m Learning

Drifting is easy. Designing a life takes intention. The 10 Domains give me a map when everything else feels noisy. When you are overwhelmed, take time to determine what is essential. In each area, what would be the most important thing to focus on and continuing doing it.

🔧 Try This (Seasonal Rhythm Hack):

Treat September like a “mini New Year.” Take 10 minutes this week to reset one daily rhythm — maybe your morning routine, your work start-up, or your evening wind-down. Even one small tweak (like setting clothes out the night before, prepping your workspace, or scheduling your first focused block) can shift the whole season.

👉 Back-to-school energy isn’t just for students — it’s a great time for adults to reset too.

To a great fall,

Terrie
