I. Broke. My. Best. Season.

What Happens When August Stops Being the Reset Button?

Terrie Power Coaching

A realization snuck up on me this week.

Not while planning. Not while coaching. Not finally putting away all the “stuff” from my 27 years in education.

It happened on an ordinary morning when I woke up and realized:

My life no longer resets in August.

For most of my adult life, summer had a rhythm.

Work hard.

Finish the school year.

Exhale.

Recover.

Reset.

Start again.

Even when summers were busy, there was always a sense that a new beginning was waiting on the other side.

And then it hit me.

That's not my rhythm anymore.

The thing I thought I was losing

If I'm honest, I felt a little sad.

For the first time, I realized I wouldn't have those long summers that had been built into my life for nearly three decades. I sat with that for a while. And then something interesting happened. As I looked ahead at my calendar, I started getting excited.

Not because I was losing summer.

Because I was beginning to see what I was gaining.

The shift I didn't expect

The interesting part isn't that I lost summer.

The interesting part is that I gained a year.

I gained the freedom to build a schedule that fits this season of life.

I gained the freedom to travel with Jason when opportunities come up.

I gained the freedom to visit friends who have moved away.

I gained the freedom to spend time with my coach.

I gained the freedom to unexpectedly spend an afternoon exploring Meow Wolf or wandering through the Water Gardens.

Most of all, I gained the freedom to build work around a life I enjoy instead of building a life around work I need to recover from.

That realization stopped me in my tracks.

What if we're waiting for the wrong thing?

As I thought about it, I realized how many of us live this way.

We wait for:

  • summer
  • vacation
  • retirement
  • things to slow down
  • next year
  • someday

We tell ourselves:

"Then I'll enjoy life."

"Then I'll have more peace."

"Then I'll finally start."

But what if the goal isn't getting to the next season?

What if the goal is creating a life that fits the season you're already in?

A question I'm carrying into July

As June comes to a close, I've been asking myself:

What do I want the next season to look like?

Not what should it look like.

Not what it looked like before.

What do I want to intentionally create?

That's exactly what we'll be exploring during the Live Quarterly Preview on June 30.

Together we'll reflect on what's working, what needs adjusting, and what we want the next quarter to look like before July arrives.

Because momentum rarely happens by accident.

It usually begins with paying attention.

And one more thing...

July is a special month around here.

Terrie Power Coaching turns five years old.

Honestly, that feels almost as strange to type as retirement.

Over the next month, I'll be sharing some stories, lessons, celebrations, and a few things I've never shared before.

And yes, there may be a few surprises too.

For now, I'm simply grateful.

Grateful for every client.

Every conversation.

Every reader.

Every person who has been part of this journey.

Talk soon,

Terrie

P.S. Before July begins, ask yourself one simple question: What do I want more of in the next 90 days? Sometimes that answer tells you exactly where to begin.

Before you start over, make sure you're solving the right problem. Terrie Power Coaching … Every August I hear the same thing. "I need to get back on track." Maybe you've said it too. Summer has a way of changing our routines. We stay up later. We travel. We say yes to things we normally wouldn't. And before we know it, August arrives and it feels like we should magically have everything figured out by Monday. Can I encourage you with one thought? Maybe nothing is wrong. Maybe you don't need...

What if you never felt ready? Terrie Power Coaching … A question for you... Have you noticed how "I just need to think about it a little more" can quietly turn into weeks...or even months? I laugh because I've said it, too. Sometimes it sounds like:"Let me do a little more research." Or..."I just need to get organized first." Or my personal favorite..."I'll start on Monday." None of those things are bad. But every now and then, they're really just another way of saying, "I'm waiting until I...

What If That Isn't True? Terrie Power Coaching … I think our brains have a favorite hobby. They make lists. Not grocery lists or to-do lists. Lists of everything that could go wrong. Why now isn't the right time. Why you're too busy. Why you don't know enough. Why someone else could do it better. The funny thing is...we rarely realize we're only reading one list. Try This Five-Minute Exercise Grab a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left, write down every reason you feel...
