Are you evaluating too soon to..

Terrie Power Coaching

Do the Thing First. Then Evaluate.

This morning, I had a moment that might sound familiar.

I set a goal to move my body for a certain number of minutes each week-something tied to my Weekly Big 3. Simple, right?

But as I got ready for my walk, my brain started to sabotage me:

"Should I do yoga instead?"
"Will this get my heart rate high enough?"
"Maybe I should walk later in the day..."
"Is this even the right kind of exercise?"

All of a sudden, I was caught in a swirl of questions, doubts, and second-guessing.
And I hadn't even left the house yet.

Here's the trap:
I was evaluating the plan while trying to execute it.
And that's not fair-to the plan or to me.

What if we saved the evaluation for after the work was done?

Here's the simple shift I made, and maybe you can try it too:

New Rule:

Follow through first. Reflect later.

Let's say your goal is 150 minutes of movement this week.
Just do the movement. However it looks.

At the end of the week (ideally during your Weekly Preview), then check:

  • Did I meet my goal?
  • How did it feel?
  • Do I want to adjust next week's approach?

That's when you can look at heart rate data, try new tools, or tweak your strategy.
Not during the workout. Not before you've even started.

Why it matters:

When you evaluate too early, it creates confusion and discouragement.

When you complete the plan first, you build momentum and confidence.

One leads to frustration.
The other leads to progress.

What about you, Reader?

Is there an area where you're overthinking mid-action?

Try giving yourself full permission to follow through-then schedule a time to evaluate.

Let your plan breathe. Let your results speak.
Then you can get curious and make it even better next time.

Cheering for you, always-

Terrie

PS After you finish something—whether it’s a project, a season, or a tough week—take a few minutes to pause and evaluate. What worked? What didn’t? What do you want to carry forward? That kind of reflection is where real growth begins. If you’re ready to take what you’ve learned and build a summer that’s more purposeful, peaceful, and aligned with your values, let’s talk. I have a limited number 1:1 coaching slots opening up for the summer. Don't miss out.

Terrie Power Coaching The Goals You Don’t Set Might Be Holding You Back Several years ago, I realized something about the way I set goals—and I’ve seen others express it as well. I used to only set goals around things I could control. Things like: how many emails I’d send, how many hours I’d work, How many days I’d work out. I avoided setting goals like: “I’ll sign 5 new clients.” “I’ll earn $10K this quarter.” “I’ll lose 10 pounds.” Why? Because those outcomes depend on other people. And I...

Terrie Power Coaching You’re more than who others think you are. To one person, you’re the steady one. To another, the dreamer. To someone else, the fixer… the peacemaker… the bold one. Everyone sees you through their own lens. And over time, it’s easy to forget:You’re allowed to be more than their version of you. We carry stories about ourselves that were handed to us—through family, work, friendships, or past experiences. Some of those stories feel true. Others? They box us in. They keep us...

Terrie Power Coaching What are my goals??? I was sitting there, heart pounding. I knew the answer, but my mind was completely blank. Someone had asked, "So, what goals do you have for this quarter?" Normally, I'm the one asking that question! I remembered coaching a group a couple of years ago. I passionately emphasized the importance of knowing your goals clearly. Many had admitted they couldn't recall theirs. So, I had stressed how critical it was to know your goals. Yet, there I was,...
