The Moment That Made Me Question Hustle
Years ago, I sat in a room listening to someone talk about hustle.
Block every minute.
Sacrifice more.
Push harder.
Everyone around me was nodding.
I remember my chest tightening. And I had this quiet thought that stuck around longer than I expected.
Maybe I just don’t want it badly enough.
That thought followed me for years.
Because I wanted to be disciplined. I showed up. I cared. I built things slowly.
And yet there were goals I would start with real energy…
and then quietly step away from when they became uncomfortable. I found I would quietly quit my goals.
Not dramatic quitting.
Just a slow drift.
I see this pattern in a lot of capable people now.
And the reason is rarely what we think.
The Protection Pattern Nobody Talks About
Most capable people don’t stall because they lack ambition.
They stall because when pressure rises, their personality shifts into protection.
I realized, through the amazing Amy Wicks at Simply Wholehearted, that there are patterns in our personalities.
Ready
You think, process, prepare.
You wait until things feel safer.
Aim
You refine and second-guess.
You keep adjusting before declaring anything finished.
Fire
You move quickly and create momentum.
Then disengage when the cost rises higher than expected.
None of these is laziness.
It’s wiring.
And once you start seeing it, you notice it everywhere. Even in people who seem incredibly productive.
Quick Pause: What Do You Do?
Pause for a second.
When a goal or pursuit starts to feel uncertain or exposed, what do you tend to do?
Do you research longer? Refine the plan again? Start something new that feels easier?
I caught myself doing this last Tuesday afternoon while working through my planner.
That was a humbling little moment.
One Small Shift That Changes Everything
Here’s something simple you could try this week.
Before starting something new, define “done for now.”
Not the masterpiece.
Not the ideal version.
Just a version you could complete with integrity.
I did this with one of my current goals. Instead of expanding it, I narrowed it. Instead of adding intensity, I added clarity.
The pressure eased almost immediately. Momentum came back.
There is something steady about finishing one meaningful thing.
It rebuilds trust with yourself. (And interestingly… most people underestimate how powerful that is.)
If You Want to See the Pattern More Clearly
I unpacked this idea more in this month’s blog.
I walk through the Ready / Aim / Fire loops and a small seven-day experiment to see how your own pattern shows up.
Not to fix you.
Just to help you see yourself more clearly.
Because once people understand their pattern, something surprising usually happens. They stop fighting themselves… and start finishing things again.
You can read it here:
Why You Don’t Finish What You Start
One Thought I Keep Coming Back To
You’re not behind. You’re learning how you move. And sometimes the most productive thing you can do is notice the moment your personality tries to protect you.
Once you see it, you get a choice.
More on that next week.

P.S.
If you’re tired of circling the same goal and quietly wondering why you can’t seem to finish it, we can look at it together.
A coaching consult isn’t pressure. It’s space to name the pattern, clarify what actually matters, and decide the next right step.
If that sounds like relief, you can schedule one here:
