🛑 When habits STOP working…

When effort isn’t the problem

Terrie Power Coaching

I’ve been thinking about how quickly we blame ourselves when something stops working.

Not dramatically.
Just that quiet internal shift where we assume we’re the problem.

Earlier this week, I published a longer reflection on the blog about why habits don’t stick. Not from a discipline angle, but from a meaning one. Writing it helped me put words to something I keep bumping into in real life.

A few nights ago, I was sitting on my couch in front of the fire after five straight days of being stuck inside during the ice storm here in Texas. We hadn’t gone anywhere. It was cold. The snow and ice were just starting to melt. Everything felt slow and still.

I glanced at my email and realized I had a workout session scheduled at 4:00 PM. A few minutes later, my trainer texted me:
“Are you coming today with the weather?”

And suddenly I had a decision to make.

My comfort zone was to stay home.
My practical brain wanted to stay home.

Not my gut. Not some deep inner knowing. Just the part of me that wanted warmth and ease.

But there was another part of me, too. The part that knew if I skipped, I couldn’t make it up. The part that had already invested money and energy. The part that didn’t want to cancel on someone who was showing up for me.

So I said yes.

If it had been just me, I probably wouldn’t have gone. But because I had invested in a relationship and a structure outside of myself, I was willing to do the uncomfortable thing.

Here’s what I keep noticing.

When habits don’t stick, it usually isn’t because we don’t care enough. It’s because we haven’t built enough support around them yet. The habit is being asked to carry more than it can on its own.

Take a minute and ask yourself this question:

Where are you trying to rely on sheer willpower when you might actually need more support?

Just something to try, if you need it.

Instead of asking whether you should be more consistent, ask what kind of support would make showing up easier right now. Sometimes that’s accountability. Sometimes it’s structure. Sometimes it’s an investment that helps you stretch before your internal capacity has fully grown.

If you want to read the full reflection that sparked all of this, it’s here:

I’m still learning this myself. I’m still building capacity. I’m still practicing being uncomfortable long enough for something new to take root.

For now, I’m letting support carry me while I grow into it.

Give yourself the support you need.

Terrie

when routines need a second look Terrie Power Coaching … I started putting my goals into place this month and almost immediately hit a few bumps. Not big, dramatic ones. Just enough friction to make me stop and think. I had done the planning. I knew what I wanted to focus on. But as the month moved on, it became clear that parts of my week were not actually set up to support what I had just decided mattered. Especially exercise. I had this new idea of how it would fit in. On paper, it made...
