Find the joy in the hard

Joy in a hard world

The world feels heavy right now.

There are things happening that scare us. News that unsettles us. Economic shifts. Health concerns. Violence. Division. So much uncertainty that it can feel irresponsible to even talk about joy or ambition.

And yet, we are still here. Still building. Still trying to live intentionally.

I’ve been thinking about joy. Not the kind that waits at the finish line. The kind that lives inside the process.

Because in midlife especially, something shifts. You have built things. You have carried responsibility. You have survived seasons that shaped you. And sometimes, even with all of that strength, productivity starts to feel heavy.

It can sound like this inside your head.

I worked this hard and nothing changed.
I did everything right and it didn’t move.
Why am I still pushing?

When the world feels unstable, it becomes even easier to disconnect from your own goals. To shrink them. To tell yourself they are not that important. To conserve energy.

Here’s what I keep noticing.

When uncertainty rises, many of us slide into protection mode. We pull back. We overwork. We overthink. We distract ourselves. We lose the spark that once made the work meaningful.

This is not weakness.

It is wiring under stress.

I think about Alysa Liu stepping away from skating when the joy was gone. She had the discipline. She had the talent. But without joy, the work became hollow. When she returned, she spoke about freedom. About loving the act itself, not just the medal.

And I think about the 82-year-old veteran living his bucket list. After a lifetime that included hardship most of us cannot imagine, he still chose curiosity. He chose to stay awake to life. Not because the world was easy, but because he did not want to drift into quiet resentment.

Pause for a moment.

If the world remains uncertain, can you still choose to live your days intentionally?

Midlife is not about ignoring what is hard. It is about deciding how you want to respond to it.

Most of the people I work with are not lacking discipline. They are navigating uncertainty without a structure that fits who they are now. Their patterns under stress begin to shape their days without them realizing it.

If that continues unchecked, it does not stay neutral. It slowly becomes your normal.

You do not need more pressure.

You need clarity.

You need to understand how you respond when things feel unstable, and you need rhythms that protect your energy instead of draining it.

If you are sensing that quiet heaviness and you do not want uncertainty to dictate your next decade, schedule the coaching consult.

On that call, we will identify your stress pattern, clarify what matters in this season, and define one focused shift that restores steadiness and momentum, and determine if coaching is right for you.

The world may be uncertain.

You do not have to drift with it.

Our personality has patterns Terrie Power Coaching … The Moment That Made Me Question Hustle Years ago, I sat in a room listening to someone talk about hustle. Block every minute.Sacrifice more.Push harder. Everyone around me was nodding. I remember my chest tightening. And I had this quiet thought that stuck around longer than I expected. Maybe I just don’t want it badly enough. That thought followed me for years. Because I wanted to be disciplined. I showed up. I cared. I built things...

When stress shifts your momentum Terrie Power Coaching … The part no one notices at first This week almost slipped by without me realizing what was happening. Not because I was busy.Because I was drifting. The stress I’m carrying right now isn’t even business-related. It’s layered. Personal. Quiet. And it changed my momentum in a way that was almost invisible. I didn’t quit anything. I didn’t blow up my plans. I just slowly disconnected from them. That subtle shift is what most people miss....

support changes everything Terrie Power Coaching … I was scrolling this week and landed on a post about someone hiring a trainer. The comments stopped me. Things like, “Why can’t you just be strong enough to do it yourself?”Or, “How sad that you have to pay someone to hold you accountable.” I felt that familiar tightening in my chest. Not because the comments were new.But because I know how easily that voice sneaks into our own heads. This week, as I was trying to put new goals into place, I...
